Licensing the Honeycrisp Apple Trees for Propagation
The Honeycrisp apple tree has received plant variety protection worldwide, including the territories of Canada, Europe, New Zealand, Australia, Chile, and South Africa. In the United States, the plant patent (PP7,197) expired on November 7, 2008 and in Canada the Plant Breeders' Rights Certificate (#1007) expired on August 10, 2019. This means that a license from the University of Minnesota is not required for propagating Honeycrisp apple trees after these dates in the United States and Canada.
