Dr. Jakub Tolar is a distinguished McKnight Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Blood and Marrow Transplantation and the Director of the University of Minnesota Stem Cell Institute. His research focuses on stem cell therapy for patients with lethal diseases—cancer, inborn errors of metabolism, and devastating genetic disorders. Dr. Tolar looks for safer and more effective methods of repairing and using a patient's own cells in diseases such as epidermolysis bullosa, mucopolysaccharidosis type I (Hurler syndrome), Fanconi anemia, and dyskeratosis congenita. He investigates the use of bone marrow derived stem cells for correcting genetic diseases and improving the outcomes for blood and marrow transplant patients. His studies include novel gene and cellular therapies.
