Solid-State Polymer Electrolytes
A solid-state polymer electrolyte has been developed and can be used for safer, longer lasting, and lower cost lithium ion battery applications and enable higher energy density. The technology produces solid-state electrolytes that are less expensive, mechanically stronger and have better ionic conductivity than current electrolytes, enabling batteries that are smaller, safer and need replacing less often than current batteries.

Smaller and Safer Lithium Battery
The electrolyte consists of a cross-linked block co-polymer, which eliminates the need for a flammable solvent, removing the chance of the battery catching fire, a problem which has plagued current batteries. The polymer electrolyte material is compatible with a high energy density lithium metal electrode. Conventional electrolytes allow the growth of lithium dendrites, which can lead to explosive failure, the described technology eliminates this growth. Costs are reduced because the synthesis is completed in a single step.
